Afferent Cue
"...going to see "Afferent Cue" is like an adventure into the world of voyeurism - at times hilarious, at other times poignant and moving - you can't help but be drawn in..."
- Kimberly Di, The Gavin Report
Americana Rockers Afferent Cue have made their presence known not only as talented SongCrafters, but as a "live performance not to be missed." (Philadelphia.com) Hitting hard with topics ranging from self-discovery, challenges and joys - to homophobia, irony and the darker side of human nature, it is no surprise that in 2011, Afferent Cue is packing the top original music venues in the Philadelphia area.
After a performance at Philadelphia’s “M Room”, Philadelphia CityPaper's ICEPACK columnist A.D. Amorosi affectionately dubbed BMI Performing Artists/Songwriters Afferent Cue "Philadelphia's Rock Alterna-Folkies", and it stuck.
While playing live shows in the PA/NJ/NYC area, a performance in Asbury Park, NJ was unexpectedly filmed for Time-Warner Cable airing to great reviews. Their song "Louisiana (Maiden, Mother and Crone)", was recognized as one of the "Top 5 New Songs of The Year" by XFS and they were asked to perform it live at X-FEST.
On the heels of that honor, Afferent Cue was also invited to play the "Philly Song Shuffle" at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia as part of the Philly Fringe Festival where they received a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd.
In 2011, Afferent Cue entered MorningStar Studios to begin recording with Grammy Award Winning Producer/Engineer, Glenn Barratt. The result was the release of their highly anticipated "Drinking With Hemingway" CD which debuted to a packed house at the Nationally Acclaimed Music Showcase The Tin Angel in Philadelphia. The event was simulcast nationwide by Toil Records/Gashouse Radio and was received by an onslaught of new fans from around the world.
On August 22, 2011 “Wish You Well” made it’s radio debut as WXPN’s Pick Of The Day and was featured later that week by The founder of the Philadelphia Folk Festival and Dean of American Folk DJs, Gene Shay on The Folk Show.
Mentions about their live performance can be found in several media outlets. Philadelphia.com recently described an Afferent Cue live performance as a "show not to be missed" and they have received numerous mentions as a "top pick" on NBC TV's "10 Around Town".
It is in live performance that Afferent Cue truly shines. Musically, the band delivers a sound that makes you sit up and take notice and Starr delivers her vocals with passion and honesty, drawing the audience into the song. In short, they love what they do, have a great time doing it and it shows.
If you close your eyes, you can hear a little Natalie Merchant, some Indigo Girls and maybe some Shelby Lynne. But [Afferent Cue] have their own style that transcends the “copy cat artist” label. ~
